THE POWER OF LEADERSHIP: DELIVERING EXCELLENCE
Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th March 2003 at The Manchester Conference Centre

The annual conference for learning and skills managers will take place on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th March 2003 at The Manchester Conference Centre. An excellent line-up of speakers has been arranged over the two days: a brief outline of the programme is detailed below.
Day One commences at 11.00 am with a welcoming address from ACM President, Richard Atkins.

Peter Pendle, ACM Chief Exec-utive & General Secretary, will lead the way for a ministerial address by Ivan Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Adult Learning & Skills.

After lunch speakers include David Gibson, Chief Executive, AoC; Brendan Barber, Deputy Chief Executive, TUC; and David Sherlock, Chief Inspector, Adult Learning Inspectorate. There will be a number of workshops to choose from during the afternoon (see opposite for further details).

Day one concludes with the conference dinner, presidential handover and presentation of ACM 2003 Awards.

Day Two commences with a representative from the learning and skills council, a repeat of the workshops from day one, an any questions session and concludes at lunchtime following speeches from John Kerr, Chief Executive, Edexcel, Chris Hughes, Chief Executive, Learning & Skills Development Agency and a senior DfES official.

The workshops will be repeated on both days to enable delegates to take full advantage of this professional development opp-ortunity. The topics, based around Success for All, include:

  • Performance related pay:
    is it inevitable given the
    Government’s determination
    to link resources to targets?
  • Rethinking mission
  • A flexible credit based
    curriculum framework
  • Is this the end of colleges as
    strategic organisations?
  • How do good leaders motivate
    their staff?

The Any Questions panel on day two will consist of Peter Pendle; Mike Stanton, Director Hay Group; Julian Gravatt, Finance Director, The City Literary Institute; Dorothy Jones, Principal Southwark College; and Ian Nash, FE Editor, TES. Delegates will have the opportunity to pose questions to the panel to evoke an interesting and lively debate.

Full information and a booking form will be sent to members in October
