Commission for Black Staff in Further Education
Discussions have taken place between ACM and the Commission
for Black Staff in Further Education. Following a successful initial
meeting talks are progressing on how ACM might be able to support the
work of the Commission.
The Commission for Black Staff in Further Education was established
by the Association of Colleges, NATFHE, the Network for Black Managers
and the Further Education Funding Council at the end of 1999 as a result
of the Stephen Lawrence inquiry report. It is funded by the Department
for Education and Skills and the Learning and Skills Council.
The Commissions definition of the term Black includes members
of African, African Caribbean, Asian and other visible minority ethnic
communities who are oppressed by racism. Its aim is to investigate the
employment position of black staff in colleges and the barriers to their
career progression in the further education sector. To further this
aim research is being undertaken which involves not only listening to
experts from government, the education sector and organisations promoting
equal opportunities, but also to staff who are affected by discrimination.
Nine witness days have been organised in colleges around the country
to gather firsthand experience from academic staff, managers and administrative
and support staff, culminating in a report to be published later in
the year.
The Commission is chaired by Mike Peters, Director of Education for
the London Borough of Lambeth. Council member Ahmed Choonara represents
ACM on the Commission.
ACM Meets The Minister
ACM representatives will be meeting with Margaret Hodge
MP early in November as part of the continuing campaign to win extra
funding for pay for FE employees and, in particular, for an extension
of the pay initiative to all staff. General Secretary Peter Pendle,
President John Rockett and John Lowe, Chair of the Employment Committee
will represent ACM at the meeting.
Initial meetings have already taken place. Peter Pendle met with senior
DfES officials in Sheffield in September in order to emphasise that
any pay solutions for the sector must be applied to all staff. The meeting
also discussed leadership and management development for senior managers
which is likely to be a priority for the Department.
