Council Report

In an effort to improve communi-cations with members ACM News will include a report of recent ACM National Council meetings. More details will be included in a bulletin for branches, which will be circulated after each meeting.

Council met at the end of September. The following items were discussed:

  • The budget for 2002 was approved and it was agreed not to increase membership subscriptions.

  • The new three year strategic plan and annual operational plan were approved. Copies of the strategic plan are available from the ACM office.

  • A discussion paper on the structure of ACM was considered, detailing alternative options for the organisation of Council and categories of membership. Council requested a further report including proposals be prepared for the next meeting, with a view to seeking approval for changes at the AGM in March 2002.

  • Final arrangements for the ACM conference in March 2002 were agreed.

  • It was agreed to give consideration to joining the Trades Union Congress in 2002.

  • ACM’s response to the Schools White Paper was approved.

  • The difficulties being discussed with Edexcel were discussed and it was agreed to seek a meeting in order to express the Association’s concerns.

Further details on any of these issues can be obtained from the ACM office, or on the ACM web-site at acm.uk.com

The Commission for Black Staff in Further Education

The Commission for Black Staff in Further Education has issued its Interim Report, detailing witness evidence and survey findings highlighting institutional racism in further education.

The Commission was established by the Association of Colleges, NATFHE, the Network for Black Managers and the Further Education Funding Council at the end of 1999 as a result of the Stephen Lawrence inquiry report, with funding from the Department for Education and Skills and the Learning and Skills Council. Its aim is to investigate the employment position of Black staff in colleges and the barriers to their career progression in the further education sector. Council member Ahmed Choonara, Principal of South Nottingham College, represents ACM on the Commission.

Copies of the Interim Report can be obtained from Josephine Ocloo, Project Director, Commission for Black Staff in Further Education, Association of Colleges, 5th Floor Centre Point, 103 New Oxford Street, London WC1A 1RG.

No increase in subscriptions in 2002

ACM’s Council has decided against increasing membership subscription rates in 2002. Many other unions have been forced to charge their members more. For example, SHA (Secondary Heads Association) is planning increases of up to 6%. Through a combination of shrewd financial management of expenditure and increasing revenue from other activities, as well as increasing applications from new members, members will continue to pay only £15 each month.
